Solid state is great – but you’ve still got to back up your data

SSD Drives are truly amazing and they offer the greatest return on investment when it comes to performance. We recommend SSD drives to everyone who cares about fast performance and wants to minimise boot time.

However, data recovery is a concern with SSD drives. If your computer dies then you should be able to simply remove an SSD drive and insert it into a standard USB enclosure to read it just as you would with any traditional drive. Then again, if there is damage to the drive itself, then this is a whole different problem. Traditional drives, when they fail, can be sent out to a clean room facility and the platters can be removed, heads can be replaced, controllers can be swapped and even though it may be expensive, data can often be recovered. SSD drives are completely different and cost will be very expensive.

So the bottom line is to have good backup regardless of whether you have a traditional hard drive or an SSD drive. Ongoing data backups and full system or image backups are a must. If your data is important to you, then you should have at least 3 backups on 3 different types of media.

The good news with SSD drives are that they are not as susceptible to mechanical failures due to shock. So you are far less likely to have a drive failure due to dropping your computer, slamming the lid or that sudden air turbulence or pothole in the road while using your laptop while traveling.

Many people lose all their data because someone tripped over the power cord and the laptop went crashing to the floor (especially if it is running at the time). Or how about the teenager that gets mad when his parents yell at him to turn off the computer and get to bed for the tenth time and the child finally slams the lid closed on his laptop and poof, hard drive crash.

The only thing that is guaranteed is that both types drives will fail at some point, you just don’t know when? The cheapest way is to run comprehensive backup regularly.
